Lions Club of ALTONA

District 201V2 Victoria Australia

Projects

Some of the activities we are involved in include:

As a club we are involved with a Major joint PROJECT with the FLOWERDALE community to help them get back on their feet after the devastating bushfires that went through the area. Several trips have been made to Flowerdale as a follow up, with council meetings and locals involved in the area recovery. To enable the community to have a place to go our club has erected a Shelter, B.B.Q area and seating. We were also able to erect a toilet facility and had the site powered. This project has enabled the club to create a bond with the community and got various local groups involved.

Our MONTHLY MARKET is held on the First Sunday of every month, except January. There are always bargains to be found at the many Craft and Bric a Brac stalls. While there you can visit our food van for a Sausage, Hot Dog or hot and cold drinks. It can be found in Cherry Lake Reserve Millers Road Altona, between Kororoit Creek Road and Civic Parade. New stall holders are always welcome for further details contact Judy 0417 595 728

We support the Lions LICOLA ADVENTURE CAMP. We send groups of school children every year. We thank the Altona RSL for their ongoing support of our not so fortunate students the opportunity to attedn this camp.

YOUNG LEADERS IN SERVICE is a project where we recognise the involvement of our youth in various activities in the community this includes St John's, Life Saving Club, Scouts and any other youth group involved with community service in the Hobson's Bay area.

YOUTH OF THE YEAR is a yearly project. This is run each year by Lion Helen Proud and her hard working committee.

HEARING DOGS is another project our club is keen to pursue again, over the years several residents have benefited by this wonderful project.

We assist the Local TRIATHLON Club by supplying marshalls for traffic control during there various seasons, this is a good money raiser for us for only a couple of hours every month or so.

Regular BUNNINGS BBQ's also help raise funds for various community groups, we are allocated about 3 or 4 per year so it is important to maximise it as much as possible. This is well supported by locals doing there weekly shopping.

RELAY FOR LIFE is held every year and is a club favourite. We enjoy the opportunity to raise awareness of this event and also the comradarie that is had on the weekend. We had a team representing Lions over this 24 hour period.  For more information check out the website

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES are an important part of Lions as it helps bond the club together. These include Theatre Nights, Ten Pin Bowling and Restaurant Nights, and a Mystery Bus Trip. November will see us once again have our Annual Cup Day Event, with many sweeps and a Calcutta on the Cup itself, this is a relaxing and fun day.

The Lions Club of Altona, together with the Hobsons Bay City Council, will again conduct their Annual AUSTRALIA DAY BREAKFAST. 2014 will see out 12th breakfast. We thank the Hobson's Bay Council for their hard work in helping make the day a success, I don't think people realise just how much support the Council give leading up to the event.

COMMUNITY SERVICE the club is directly involved with includes Collections for the Salvation Army, this is raising funds during their annual appeal plus giving toys and hamper items at Christmas for those less fortunate.

Helping with the RCH Good Friday Appeal, we have collection centres at various shopping centres, this year we raised approximately $1000.

This year also saw us help the RSL Club for the first time  with their ANZAC Day Appeal, the clubs efforts helped raise just under $3000. We must thank Lion Josie and Lion Nancy for using their initiative in this area. They are now looking at helping out for the Remembrance Day Poppy Day Appeal so be prepared when asked to volunteer.

MEMBERSHIP as with most clubs is always a priority issue with our club, new membership is vital for the future of all Lions Clubs. New prospective members are always made to feel welcome with no pressure applied to join. Anyone wishing to join can contact the club at

The Club was successful in obtaining a Grant for a Social Skills Program for Autistic Children in Hobson's Bay. This has now been held and was a resounding success.

Lions is a community service organisation! People join Lions because they want to user their intellect, creativity, commitment and enthusiasm to get things done.  This is where you can find out about the sorts of projects that your local Lions Club is doing.  Like what you see?  Get involved!
